MONTGOMERY COUNTY SEARCH AND RESCUE ASSISTS IN LOCATING LOST HIKERS

On Tuesday, shortly after midnight, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting a missing hiker in the Sam Houston National Forest. Friends of the missing man advised 26-year-old Ryan Andrew is an accomplished hiker and left his home in Houston with his dog and provisions for a day of hiking on the Lone Star Hiking System in Northwest Montgomery County. When the roommates were unable to contact Mr. Andrew late in the evening by phone, they drove from Houston to Montgomery County and located his car parked at the trailhead parking lot.
Montgomery County Deputies responded, and with the help of the Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter, searched the area but was unable to locate Mr. Andrew. Due to the late hour and darkness, a ground search was ruled out until the first light. On Wednesday morning Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputies, Montgomery Fire Department, Montgomery County hospital District, Texas Department of Criminal Justice K-9 Division, Texas Department of Public Safety, U.S. Forest Service, and 18 volunteers with Montgomery County Search and Rescue all assisted in the search. At approximately 2:35 pm TDCJ Bloodhounds located Mr. Andrew and his dog along with another male (33-year-old Joshua Rojas) in the South Wilderness Trail/Little Lake Creek bottom area, about two miles off of the cut trail and approximately four-miles from Trail Head #3 where they had parked the car.
The hikers indicated they got turned around late in the evening and ventured off the trail and lost their way. They stayed the night along Lake Creek drinking creek water to stay hydrated.
The Sheriff’s Office put out a big thank you to all who assisted in the operation and the civilian volunteers of the Montgomery County Search and Rescue group.
