MURDER OVER WEED EATER LEADS TO ARREST

Liberty County Sheriff’s Sergeant Investigator Paul Lasco announced early this morning, Monday, June 27th. that he has arrested Melvin Adalberto Morales’Rivas, DOB 10-30-87 and charged him with murder in the shooting death of Vincente Rodriquez of the Bella Vista Sub-Division where Morales’Rivas, himself, also lives. According to Sgt. Lasco, Melvin Morales’Rivas turned himself in around 2:30am this morning after a warrant for murder was issued by Judge Chap Cain out of his 253rd. District Court. The motive for this murder is alleged to have occurred over a weed eater that Rodriguez had that belonged to Melvin Morales’Rivas.

The circumstances of this shooting began to develop when Erwin Antonio Donis’Morales, DOB 3-25-76 came to the Sheriff’s Office around 6:pm Sunday evening and surrendered himself telling deputies that he was with Morales’Rivas when the murder occurred. Donis’Morales brought his own 40 caliber semi-automatic pistol with him and turned it over to the investigators saying this was the gun used in the shooting. A statement was taken from Donis’Morales regarding his part in this shooting and a warrant was then issued for Melvin Morales’Rivas.

During the course of the initial investigation, Sgt. Lasco in interviewing Ms. Rodriguez was told about a weed eater grass cutting machine that Vincente Rodriguez told his wife he had found along side of the highway and he picked it up and brought it home. After Donis’Morales turned himself in to the Sheriff’s Office, he told Sgt. Lasco that he and Melvin Morales’Rivas were in partners with a small yard care business and that Morales’Rivas had come to him earlier and told him he knew who had the weed eater and that it was at the home of Vincente Rodriguez and they should go and get it back. According to Donis’Morales they only planned to go to the home of Rodriguez and talk to him about the weed eater and try to get him to return it. Upon arrival at Rodriguez’s home, it is alleged by Donis’Morales, who has a Concealed Handgun License, that he left his 40 caliber semi-automatic pistol on his car seat when he went up to the door to talk to Rodriguez. At some point during his conversation with Ms. Rodriguez, the van suddenly burst into flames and when Vincente Rodriguez ran out of his home to extinguish the fire, that is when Melvin Morales’Rivas came up to Rodriguez and began shooting him. According to Donis’Morales, he thinks Morales’Rivas took his 40 caliber pistol from his car and used it to shoot Rodriguez. Again, according to Erwin Donis’Morales, both the vehicle fire and the shooting came as a total surprise to him as none of this was type reprisal was talked about or discussed prior to their arrival at the Rodriguez home. Based upon the admission of Erwin Donis’Morales and the recovery of the murder weapon, the murder warrant was secured from Judge Chap Cain for the arrest of Melvin Morales’Rivas. At this time, Erwin Donis’Morales has been released without charges.

Sgt. Lasco reported that at approximately 2:30am this morning, Monday, June 27th, Melvin Adalberto Morales’Rivas surrendered himself at the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office and through an interpreter and due to a language barrier, refused to admit to the shooting and only stated he wanted an attorney.

Melvin Morales’Rivas has been booked into the Liberty County jail charged with murder and due to the fact he has been deported one time from the United States and when he re-entered the U.S. is unknown, he also has a “hold” on him for Immigrations ( ICE ). The investigation is continuing and it will be determined at a later date if additional charges such as arson for the burning of the vehicle will be included.
