New Caney Ag Boosters Second Annual Donkey Basketball event Tuesday night was great fun for everyone involved. The Donkey’s came all the way from Tennessee for the event. Besides being bucked, thrown, or just falling off the donkey’s everyone had plenty of fun.
The rules of Donkey Basketball are fairly simple. You must be on your donkey to shoot the ball, and defend against the other team’s shots. In a new rule this year, riders can make passes from the court, which seemed to help speed things along.
If there is a loose ball you are allowed to dismount and try to get it, as long as your donkey is willing. I forgot to bring a nice, juicy carrot for a persuasion tactic, so it came down to who was closest.
Each team has four riders and one “center.” This team member is not on a donkey. The center is positioned in the middle of the court acting as a relay unable to leave the jump circle unless their team scores.
In this case the center runs to retrieve the ball and inbound it before their team gets too far down the court.
The donkeys have played the game so many times they sense when their rider has the ball and make their way to the hoop as the rest of the team follows.
