OBITUARY-CHIEF ROYCE GEST

Chief Royce Gest, started his career with the Houston Fire Department on December 1, 1955. He soon climbed the ranks to Captain at Station 31 and Station 28.  Not long after he became District Chief the massive fire at the Woodway Square Apartments took place. On July 31, 1979, as the fire was dispatched Chief Gest was the first to roll in. The apartments, built with wooden shingles had caught fire, the winds were quite strong and the fire was jumping from building to building.  Chief Gest had his hands full that day, not just dealing with the apartment fire but the embers that were landing on wood shingle roofs and having brush trucks patrol the neighborhood for spot fires. Chief Gest retired on December 11, 1986.  Chief Gest died Friday after losing his battle with cancer.
