On Monday, members of the Precinct 5 Constable’s Office wrapped up an undercover illegal gambling investigation at Mike’s Grocery (a convenience store and Conoco gas station) located in the 32000 block of SH 249 in Pinehurst.
The store contained 10 of the 8-liner type gaming machines that are legal to operate in Texas, as long as the payout is in merchandise valued at no more than $5. They are continually an issue because store owners and/or managers do not follow the rule of law, as Constable David Hill says was the case at Mike’s Grocery. Undercover operatives witnessed cash payouts of amounts that far exceeded the $5 limit and called for uniformed Pct. 5 deputies to respond to the location.
Deputies arrested 40-year-old Zulfiqar Dhuka, a Pakistani National living in College Station, and charged him with Possession of Gambling Device/Equipment/Paraphernalia; Gambling Promotion; and Keeping a Gambling Place.
Dhuka was booked into the Montgomery County Jail in Conroe where bond was set at $750 on each of the illegal gambling related charges. However, he will not be released on bond because the United States Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed an “hold” on him, meaning when his legal issues with Montgomery County are resolved, ICE will take custody of him.
