PIT CHARGES OFFICER –SHOTS FIRED

Houston police are investigating an incident in which an HPD officer discharged his duty weapon at 2203 Gessner Road about 2:25 a.m. today (April 17).

Officer R. Estrada, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in this incident.  Officer Estrada was sworn in as an officer in April 2007 and is assigned to the Northwest Patrol Division.

HPD Homicide Division Senior Police Officer X. Avila and Officer R. Lujan reported:

Officer Estrada responded to an assault in progress call at a Valero at the above address.  Upon arrival, he observed several females yelling and arguing in the parking lot near the gas pumps.  A large pit-bull then jumped out of a vehicle parked at the gas pump and charged at Officer Estrada.  Fearing he was being attacked, Officer Estrada discharged his duty weapon, striking the dog.  One of the fired rounds ricocheted off the ground and struck the dog’s owner in the leg.  She was transported to Southwest Memorial Hermann Hospital where she was treated and released.  There are no charges in this incident.

As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions, as well as the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
