Pursuit leads to recovery of stolen vehicle, arrest of couple

Around 9:15 a.m. Monday, Montgomery County Precinct 4 Deputy Constables were southbound on Old Houston Road near Springfield when they saw a northbound white 2000 Ford F 350 pickup with no front license plate approach and pass them at a high rate of speed. The deputies turned around and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the suspect refused to stop. He turned west on FM 3083 and then onto Quinette Road. The suspect continued to increase his speed, topping out around 80 miles per hour, where the speed limit is 30 miles per hour.

The suspect turned into a residence in the 14700 block of Quinette Rd. The pickup briefly slowed down and a woman jumped out of the vehicle and ran behind the house as the suspect accelerated and tried to drive through a field behind the residence. Because of recent flooding, the pickup lost traction and became stuck. The driver, Shawn Willett, then rushed out of the vehicle on the passenger side and fled on foot through the flooded field, toward a nearby wooded area.

Two Precinct 4 Deputy Constables then pursued Willett on foot. He ignored their commands to stop and began reaching into his pocket, at which point the deputies were forced to deploy a TASER. Only one barb from the TASER struck Willett, who then proceeded to again reach for something in his pocket. The second deputy deployed his TASER, which successfully subdued the suspect and he was taken into custody without further incident.

Deputies returned to the house where Willett turned in, and in the backyard, they found Durena Byrd, the woman who jumped out of the truck. Byrd was detained and a check of her identity through dispatch revealed she had an active felony warrant through Montgomery County.

When asked why he fled, Willett said the pickup was stolen. Byrd admitted she knew it was a stolen vehicle. The pair had been using it for over a week.
