quick response by fire department and help of public put off potential firestorm in grangerland area

At 12:39 this afternoon Caney Creek Fire Department was dispatched to a grass and woods fire in the 10,000 of Crockett Martin Road near Grangerland. As units were responding a second call came in to Firecomm that homes were being threatened. This  caused Chief Flannelly to have additional trucks dispatched. Another call then came in that the fire had jumped the road. Moments later Chief Flannelly and the first truck arrived to find 3 separate fires burning along the roads edge and moving toward not just homes but extremely dense woods. Those woods back up to Caney Creek and if it had gotten into that area it could potentially go for miles.

As firefighters started fighting the fire and attempting to protect the homes and woods several residents and passerby’s stopped and began grabbing green tree limbs slapping them on the ground extinguishing the fire.

It got within fifty feet of two homes and within inches of the heavy woods.

Caney Creek was assisted by Cut and Shoot Fire Department.

The cause is yet undetermined but there were three separate areas within one hundred yards that were burning.

Please be careful as the grass is extremely dry.
