Train Cars Leak 73k Gallons of Non-toxic Chemical

According to Grimes County Sheriff Don Sowell, a non-toxic chemical has been spilled from 7-8 train cars. Officials say the cars were carrying 73,000 gallons of Diethanolamine, or DEA.

According to Wikipedia, DEA is a surfactant and a corrosion inhibitor. It is used to remove hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide from natural gas.

Law enforcement officers are shutting down Highway 6 in all directions. Drivers should avoid the area. A detour is being set up along Highway 90, to FM 1227, then back to Highway 6, south of Navasota.

Sheriff Don Sowell says there may be damage to the Highway 6 overpass.
