Roommate Shooting

An early morning confrontation between room mates resulted in Johnathan Holmes Hunt, 41 of CR 2218 in North Liberty County being shot one time in the right leg of the thigh area. The shooting which took place around 7 a.m. Monday morning was reported to Liberty County Sheriff Deputy Justin Jonathan as being the result of an assault upon Donna Jay Wallace, age 58 of the same address who shot Hunt.

According to Ms. Wallace, an argument developed between she and Hunt over Hunt’s insistence that a lock be changed to her bed room door so he would have access to her room when he wanted and Wallace’s refusal to allow the lock to be changed. Donna Wallace told Dep. Jonathan that she was in her bed room when Hunt kicked the door off the hinges and began hitting her. It was at this point that Wallace grabbed a 380 automatic pistol and fired three shots at Hunt hitting him in the leg with one of the shots.

Deputy Jonathan said that according to Hunt, there was not a door on the bedroom and he did not kick any door in to gain entry. However, Deputy Jonathan found evidence that there had been a door attached to the door facing and for some unexplained reason, another unknown man who was visiting at the time of the disturbance, apparently stole the battered door and removed it, and himself, from the scene.  The assumption for stealing the door, according to Dep. Johnathan, was to verify Hunt’s story about no door being on the bed room and the fact his boot prints would not be on the door indicating he had kicked the door in. Evidence at the scene, however, indicated otherwise. The search for the unknown man and the stolen door is underway for tampering with evidence of a crime.

Jonathan Hunt was treated at the Liberty/Dayton hospital for a gunshot wound to the leg and then placed in the Liberty County jail. Hunt has been charged with Assault Deadly Violence and Criminal Trespass. He is expected to be brought before a Judge in the morning in order to set a bond.

No charges are expected to be filed against Donna Wallace for the shooting.
