Sheriff’s Office Investigating Skimmers in East County

On July 30, 2018, Deputies with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the Exxon gas station located at 1800 North Park Drive, Kingwood, Texas in reference to credit card skimmers being found on gas pumps.
Deputies arrived and learned that Exxon gas station staff were conducting maintenance on a fuel pump when the tech discovered a credit card skimmer had been attached on the inside of the pump. Staff checked the remaining pumps and found a total of 5 credit card skimmers attached on pumps. The skimmers were removed by Deputies and logged into evidence. Video surveillance is currently being analyzed in an attempt to locate suspects.
This isn’t the first instance of skimmers being found at this gas station. On June 13, 2018, we were dispatched to the Exxon and upon arriving found two credit card skimmers attached to the inside of gas pumps. That case is also being investigated.
With our increasing dependence on debit and credit card transaction we want to provide a little information to you regarding skimmers. In recent years, credit card fraud and identity theft have steadily increased. Part of those crimes involved the use of credit card skimmers. Skimmers have been found on fuel dispensers and ATMs across the country. Criminals use these devices to secretly steal credit and debit card information, which is used to commit fraud and identity theft.
You can protect yourself by taking some simple steps to deter criminals from installing skimmers, detect skimmers if they have been installed. Please watch a few videos that we selected that will educate you on what to look for regarding credit card skimmers.

Follow these simple and easy steps to limit your chances of being a victim to identify theft.

1. Check your account regularly for any suspicious activity.
2. If paying at the pump use a pump close to the attendants. If the pump seal is broken or doesn’t have one DON’T USE IT. If the lock looks tampered don’t use it.
3. Pay inside at the pump.
4. Check the credit card machine or ATM for any tampering or any skimming device being added to where you insert your credit card.
