From Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office:
We would like to bring to your attention yet another scam alert.
At least 3 residents have received calls from people posing as representatives of the IRS demanding payment and the number (281) 297-6500 is showing up on their Caller ID as the number they are calling from. This number is the main switchboard number primarily for the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, South Patrol Division, District 6.
Please keep in mind neither the IRS nor any Law Enforcement agency will call you and threaten to put you in jail if you do not make immediate payments over the phone.
Common trends include the use of disposable credit cards such as “Green Dot” cards or trying to scam you into using your personal credit cards. DO NOT give any credit card info out to anyone you cannot verify is the actual place of business you are wanting to deal with. The best way to do this is to research their business and find listed phone numbers, then call them back yourself.
Many scammers are believed to be using apps to mask their phone number on caller ID, but when you call that number back it is the actual number for a legitimate place of business or agency (so hang up and verify!)
