The Liberty County Sheriff’s dispatcher received a call at approximately 11:50 am today from the Liberty/Dayton Regional Hospital regarding a female shooting victim that had just arrived at their emergency room. Upon initial investigation by the Patrol Deputies the victim was found to be Rhonda Matthews, DOB 7-29-82 who was suffering from a bullet wound that went completely through the right arm with the bullet then entering the right side and lodging just under her heart. Life Flight air ambulance responded and transported the victim to Herman Hospital in Houston in critical condition.
According to lead Investigator Sgt. Josh Cummins who along with Sgt. Chris Ungles are conducting the follow-up investigation, Rhonda Matthews and her boy friend, Darin Lee Walker , live together at the CR 2502 address in the Knight’s Forrest Sub-Division where an argument started over a refrigerator that was not working. At some point in the argument, Walker became angry and claimed he fired a single shot from a 9mm automatic pistol in the opposite direction of Matthews but, yet, the bullet struck Matthews in her right arm and side.
During the course of the investigation, investigators found Walker to be in possession of Methamphetamines and he was arrested for that offense. The investigation regarding the circumstances of the shooting is on-going and it will be determined later if any charges will be filed after talking to the shooting victim.
Darin Lee Walker, DOB 7-29-82 was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance and placed in the Liberty County jail for that offense.
