Shots Fired at Liberty County Deputy, Investigation

Liberty County Sheriff’s Patrol Captain Mark Ellington reported that one of his deputies heard five rapid gunshots when he was walking out of the Court House Annex building in Cleveland, Texas at approximately 12:30 a.m. last Friday. The deputy was walking toward his patrol vehicle  when two of the bullets struck the windshield of his patrol unit, missing the him by about 18” to 24”. The strike area of the other three bullets were not found. Fortunately, the deputy was not injured.

The deputy reported to Capt. Ellington that the shots appeared to have come from an apartment complex across the street from the Annex building or from a wooded area immediately adjacent to the complex. Sheriff’s deputies and the Cleveland Police Department Officers responded to the scene immediately but the suspect was not located. This is the first incident of its kind in Liberty County as far as deputies are aware.

The Cleveland Police Department is conducting a follow-up investigation because the offense occurred within their jurisdiction. Any further information as to the result of their investigation will be coming from that department.

The Sheriff’s Department as well as the Cleveland Police Department are asking for any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect(s) responsible for this senseless criminal act.
