SLOWER VEHICLES MOVE RIGHT

DPS Troopers were out in Montgomery County watching for drivers who were driving in the left lane causing traffic to back up behind them. A Texas law which has been on the books for over 30 years has seldom been enforced. Recently, drivers not moving from the left lane have led to additional accidents, road rage and incidents where weapons are pulled on the drivers. The law requires motorists on multi-lane roadways to move out of the left lane if faster traffic approaches behind them. This does not pertain to drivers who are in the process of passing or turning left. DPS also explains that if you are in the left lane with no traffic next to you, it is not illegal to drive in that lane even if you are running lower than the speed limit. Today several drivers were stopped and issued warnings.Of the ones stopped none were aware of the law. Enforcement is expected to continue on this until the public is aware of it. In addition, according to NHTSB people driving in the left lane at night are also more prone to be involved in a crash with a wrong way driver. Most intoxicated or impaired drivers seem to think they are in the correct lane and going to correct direction.
