SOLDIER KILLED TRYING TO DISARM IED

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Staff Sgt. Derek J.Farley, 24, of Nassau, New York an Explosive Ordinance Disposal Technician, was killed Tuesday morning in Bala Boluk, Farah, Afghanistan when a roadside bomb he was attempting to disarm detonated, according to the Department of Defense.

He was just two weeks away from finishing what would have been his second tour of duty in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense reports Farley was assigned to the 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command out of Grafenwoehr, Germany.
