Recently, there has been increasing media coverage involving the thefts of purses from patrons’ vehicles at local gas stations, daycares and convenience stores. Unfortunately, it is common for customers to leave their vehicles unlocked with wallets and purses in plain view while completing seemingly quick tasks. Often, the victim is just feet away from their vehicle. This setting gives them a false sense of security while creating an opportunity for thieves to strike quickly. Such crimes often occur in just seconds. A thief is able to drive up beside a victim’s vehicle and open an unlocked door, reach inside and remove any valuables in sight.

Here are some valuable tips:

– Remember, at night, to choose locations that are well lit and utilize security cameras.

-Always remove your keys and lock your vehicle, even when pumping gas.

-Keep any valuables out of plain view and lock your doors, even if you are “Just running in for a minute.”

-Pay attention to your surroundings, including when arriving and departing.

-Don’t let your cell phone be a distraction.

Be safe and be alert.
