Special K-9’s is a volunteer group based in The Woodlands.
Their mission is to provide agencies with experienced and professional volunteers to assist in the detection, location, and recovery of buried primary crime scenes and hidden remains using specially trained cadaver/forensic canines.
Special K-9s have provided their expertise in the location of human remains and evidence. They are skilled in crime scene preservation. Their cadaver/forensic canines are trained to locate and alert on the scent of human decomposition: tissue, blood, bones etc. These dogs are trained not to alert on animal remains, only human remains.
The K-9 unit is dedicated to assisting law enforcement and search and rescue personnel. Special K-9’s provide a professional Search and Recovery Dog Team specializing in land, water, ash and vehicle.
Special K-9’s has responded to many searches, including missing persons and drowning recovery. Some of these include commercial/residential fire evidence Searches, man-made and natural disasters, rural and urban searches, homicide investigations, missing persons, and water searches.
The group founded in 1999 is currently made up of 26 members with 25 canines. Of those 5 are certified in land recovery and 4 are certified in water recovery. They also train other agencies and put on cadaver/forensic demonstrations throughout the year.
Many times they have been called out in Montgomery, Harris and Liberty Counties and successfully located remains.
They have traveled around the country at the request of other agencies to assist in tornado devastation, missing persons believed to be dead, and drowning’s.
The team is now needing to raise money for seminars and education. To accomplish this they are selling Special K-9’s “Hunt Day” T-shirts at a cost of $20 each. Their goal is 250 shirts in the next week. The shirts will be delivered in 2 weeks.
