STOLEN VEHICLE LEADS OFFICIALS TO JACKPOT

Information received by the Liberty County Sheriff Department from the victim of an auto theft, in Harris County, resulted in the recovery of not only the victim’s vehicle but a large number of other vehicles, utility trailers, tractors and a motorcycle along with other stolen items. Although the initial information flowed through the Sheriff’s Department, the entire investigation was later turned over to the Department of Public Safety Auto Theft Task Force.

On Monday, October 28th. the victim of the auto theft reported his vehicle stolen while in Harris County. His vehicle had a GPS on board that “pinged” to a location on CR 688 in Liberty County. The following day, October 29th. this information was reported to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Department and Deputy Robert Dunn along with Sgt. Investigator Billy Knox went to the CR 688 location. During the preliminary investigation, the decision was made to contact DPS Auto Theft Task Force who responded to the scene and the entire investigation was turned over to them for follow up as well as any criminal charges that may later be filed. No arrest were made by the Sheriff’s Department.

Sgt. Knox stated that due to the number of stolen vehicles found at this location that it is probably one of the largest operations of its kind in recent memory in Liberty County. Due to some earlier reports on the activity at that location, the Sheriff’s Department had been monitoring the site but it was the confirmed location by the stolen vehicle from Harris County with the GPS “pinging” that particular location that confirmed earlier suspicions and gave adequate cause for a search of the property.
