HOUSTON — In a Saturday afternoon press conference, Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman said a suspect has been charged in the Friday night shooting death of HCSO Deputy Darren Goforth at a convenience store where he was refueling his patrol car.

Shannon J. Miles, 30, is charged with Capital Murder.

Miles’ criminal history includes Resisting Arrest; Disorderly Conduct – Discharge / Display Firearm; Failure to Identify / Give False or Fictitious Information; state jail felony Criminal Mischief; Criminal Trespass; and Evading Arrest / Detention.

Sheriff Hickman said the execution style shooting was unprovoked and investigators still have no motive for the killing of the 47-year-old deputy, husband, and father of two, which Hickman called a “cold blooded assassination.”

He asked for prayer for Goforth’s family, for the rest of the Sheriff’s Office, and for all those in uniform.

“Our deputies return to the streets tonight to hold a delicate peace that was shattered last evening,” Hickman said.

Goforth’s children are 5 and 12 years old.
