At 4:49 am a 17-year-old female identified as Joelissa Hernandez, was driving a 2007 Toyota Corolla in the rear gravel parking lot of K and M Foods on FM 1097 at South Woodson in Willis. Two friends were in the vehicle with her, a 17-year-old female and the friend’s 16-year-old brother. According to Willis Police, the driver was doing doughnuts in the small parking lot when she struck a guy wire supporting a utility pole. By striking the cable the vehicle flipped on its side partially ejecting the unrestrained 16-year-old male passenger. North Montgomery County Fire was dispatched along with MCHD. The male was pronounced deceased on the scene. The 17-year-old passenger was transported to Texas Children’s Hospital in stable condition. The 17-year-old driver was not injured. Entergy was contacted as the crash caused the transformer on the pole to break loose. It was being held up by a single wire. Before the vehicle could be removed the transformer had to be secured and the guy wire cut away from the vehicle. DPS assisted Willis Police on the investigation. The Montgomery County District Attorneys Office Vehicular Crimes Uit responded to the scene. After mandatory blood draw on the driver of the vehicle and alcohol found in the vehicle including open containers, she was charged with Intoxication Manslaughter and transported to the Montgomery County Jail. Montgomery County Justice of the Peace Wayne Mack responded to the scene for the inquest and ordered Eickenhorst Funeral Directors to transport the victim to the Montgomery County Forensic Center for autopsy. The vehicle was removed by Milstead Wrecker Service.
