Texas House of Representative Cecil Bell, Jr. of District 3, presented  a resolution to the Montgomery County Hospital District’s Board of Directors for EMS Provider of the Year on Tuesday afternoon. Annually, at the Texas EMS Conference, the Office of EMS and Trauma Systems honor an organization that exemplifies the best that EMS and trauma systems have to offer. Montgomery County Hospital District’s EMS was given this prestigious award for demonstrating leadership in EMS patient care, public access, medical control, disaster preparedness, public education and training. “This is additional proof to what we already know. MCHD EMS is the best in Texas. Montgomery County is fortunate to have the most talented paramedics and support staff in the state. We are honored that Representative Cecil Bell, Jr. is presenting the resolution to our Board of Directors,” said Randy Johnson, MCHD Chief Executive Officer.

In addition to being awarded EMS Provider of the Year, MCHD ALARM, a dispatch center for Montgomery County Emergency Medical Services and Conroe Fire Department has been officially awarded, Emergency Fire Dispatch Accreditation by the National Academy of Emergency Fire Dispatch. This recognition was accomplished by submitting and formally documenting and describing all the Accreditation requirements – “twenty points of Accreditation excellence.”

At present time, MCHD ALARM is now the only dual-accredited dispatch center in Texas with both Fire and Medical Accreditations and among only 21 centers worldwide. ALARM dispatches for a service area of 1,100 square miles, with a population of 500,000, including processing 50,000 calls for service per year and ability to communicate in more than 200 languages in Montgomery County. “It is a great honor to work with all of you in ALARM and this Accreditation highlights your professionalism, dedication, and commitment to the citizens of Montgomery County and Texas,” said Matthew Walkup, Alarm Manager

Accredited centers like ALARM share a common goal of improving public care and maximizing the efficiency of 911 systems. “This Accreditation benefits everyone in Montgomery County and those participating in the dispatch process: caller, family, victim, community, responders, ancillary organizations, quality control, and others,” said Walkup.

The International Academies of Emergency Dispatch is a non-profit standard-setting organization promoting safe and effective emergency dispatch services world-wide. Comprised of three allied Academies for medical, fire and police dispatching, the IAED supports first-responder related research, unified protocol application, legislation for emergency call center regulation, and strengthening the emergency dispatch community through education, certification, and Accreditation.

The National Academies of Emergency Dispatch® (NAED™) has its origins in the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch® that was created in 1988 as a standard-setting organization for the field of emergency medical dispatch. Since its inception, NAED has occupied two roles: one as a membership-driven association for the professional recognition of dispatchers and, the other, as an Academy that develops and maintains dispatch protocols and curriculum for member use in response to emergency calls for help.

This emphasis on research, testing and quality assurance puts NAED in a category separate from many other EMS and public safety organizations. While NAED supports a large and varied membership, it also functions to provide state-of-the-art protocol that assists in the most appropriate allocation of communication center resources. In 2000 and 2001 Fire and Police Protocols were added to the Medical Protocols making them the industry leader and “gold standard” choice for multi-agency dispatching.

NAED is a strong and authoritative voice for emergency dispatch programs nationally and internationally and partners with other influential emergency response groups such as the National Emergency Number Association (NENA), the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP), the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada among others to help guide, improve, and professionalize emergency dispatch worldwide.

The mission of the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch is to advance and support the public-safety emergency telecommunications professional and ensure that citizens in need of emergency, health, and social services are matched safely, quickly, and effectively with the most appropriate resource

Currently, ALARM / DCS are collaborating with Audrey Fraizer the Managing Editor of the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch to publish an article in The Journal of Emergency Dispatch regarding this outstanding accomplishment.
