The Candy Man can… go to jail

By Jamie Nash

EAST MONTGOMERY COUNTY – The Montgomery County Pct. 4 Constable’s Office made a sweet seizure Friday night, when Deputy Josh Bergland stopped a 1995 Chevy Tahoe for a violation.

The SUV pulled out of the Valero station at the intersection of FM 1485 and FM 3083 in Grangerland, traveling east on FM 1485. Bergland tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver refused to pull over until he almost reached SH 242.

The driver, identified as 33-year-old Steven Paul Wortman, allegedly had a cardboard chocolate covered cherry box, sealed with electrical tape, with $9,900 in cash inside.

Wortman, whose address is listed as 1125 Jaywalker Rd. in Cleveland, was charged with money laundering (more than $1,500 and less than $20,000). His bond is set at $26,500.

Police records show Wortman’s prior convictions include possession of a controlled substance, driving while intoxicated, forgery of a financial instrument and burglary of a vehicle.

Pct. 4 Constable Rowdy Hayden’s administration has now filed over 1,000 cases since Jan. 1 when Hayden took his oath of office.
