At 1:30 this morning Michael Dougherty of 12010 Willowridge Circle just off Longmire in northwest Conroe was in bed and awakened by the burglar alarm. His television was popping and he could smell smoke. As he went to investigate, thinking it was electrical he shut off the breakers and started looking for the source. When he got to the garage of the almost five thousand square foot house flames were visible. With the fire department enroute he was able to get his Escalade out of the garage just in time.
Firefighters arrived within ten minutes and were met with heavy fire conditions. As they battled the garage fire erupted from the attic of the home also.
A second alarm was pulled bringing River Plantation, Lake Conroe and North Montgomery County Fire Departments to the scene. With the additional manpower the fire still roared out of control.
One firefighter injured an ankle while on the roof attempting to make an attack.
Over an hour of intense battle they were finally able to bring it under control. Some of the reason was the shiplap in the homes construction that made it so difficult.
Just before 5am units were able to start returning to service.
The Conroe Fire Marshal was on the scene and has started the investigation to the cause.
