MONTGOMERY FATAL HOUSE FIRE
Montgomery County has recorded it’s first fatal house fire for 2013. Just after 3 a.m. this morning a woman who was visiting a friend saw flames coming from a home down the street at 20183 Lakeway Drive and ran down the road to try to alert the owner. Several other neighbors were also alerted and assisted knocking on doors and windows. By that time the entire back corner of the house and porch were in flames.

Four minutes later Montgomery Fire Department arrived and started to battle the blaze. When they entered the house and knocked the flames down they found the owner, Estenislao “Sam” Torres dead on the floor.

Torres was taken to the Montgomery County Forensic Center by Eikenhorst Funeral Directors.

The Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the scene and began to sift through the rubble looking for clues to the cause of the blaze. A cause has not yet been determined. Kevin Bates with the Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office said friends said he did have a smoke detector but due to the extent of the damage that has yet to been determined.

Sam Torres who was 69 years old has lived in the home since 1967. He was living in the home alone at the time. However, his wife and neighbors said he was always working to improve it. Sam was the sole owner of “Sammy’s Lawn Care”

The Fire Marshal’s Office also determined after talking with neighbors that Torres had 3 deadbolt locks on the front door. Some of which were double key type locks. They also said that Torres did not have keys so he normally exited out the back door. The back door area and the porch is where the fire was at the time.

Bates said they believe Torres was asleep on the couch as the bedroom door. He said he didn’t feel Torres was trapped.

OLD 105 AUTO TRAIN CRASH
Just before 7 p.m., Sunday calls started coming into the Montgomery County 911 Center. Reports said the eastbound train was pushing it down the tracks. Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, MCHD, and Cut and Shoot Fire Department responded to the scene. They found the train stopped at South Duck Creek and Old Highway 105 East. Crushed against the front of it was a silver Volkswagen.

The train conductors said they saw it on the tracks and knew they couldn’t stop. They did witness 4 males jump out at the Nebraska Street Crossing, a private drive. One conductor said he prayed when they hit it and pushed it for over three-fourths of a mile that nobody was still in it.

The train which had been eastbound was pulling 120 cars at a total weight of 17000 tons and was almost 7000 feet long.

Residents who lived south of the crossing where they hit were not able to leave their homes as the train had it blocked for over 3 hours as the crash was investigated.

The driver of the vehicle identified as a 17-year-old from Splendora who not only didn’t have permission to use his parent’s vehicle but no Texas driver’s license.

There were no injuries.

Texas Towing and Recovery spent almost one hour attempting to free the vehicle from the train and remove it from the tracks as the engine had completely fallen out from under it.

MOTORCYCLIST KILLED AFTER STRIKING PARKED SUV ON FREEWAY
At 8:08 pm Wednesday 911 operators began getting multiple calls for a motorcycle crash on I-45 southbound just south of Woodlands Parkway. Units arrived on the scene to find the driver of a Harley Davidson motorcycle deceased on the freeway. DPS responded to the scene to investigate. They determined a driver of a green GMC 1500 SUV had broken down on the inside shoulder of the freeway. A friend driving a white Chevrolet SUV pulled up next to him in the High Occupancy Lane and proceeded to try to jump the battery of the GMC SUV. A motorcyclist driving south in the HOV lane did not see the parked SUV in the lane and slammed into it. He was killed instantly. None of the other two drivers were injured. Motorcycles are permitted by federal law to use HOV lanes, even with only one passenger. The rationale behind allowing motorcycles to use HOV lanes is that it is safer to keep two-wheeled vehicles moving than to have them travel in start-and-stop traffic conditions. Eickenhorst Funeral Directors transported the victim to the Montgomery County Forensic Center for autopsy. Ricky’s Wrecker towed the white SUV, Woodlands Wrecker towed the GMC 1500 and Miller towed the motorcycle
