walker county man shot during compliance check

     On Wednesday April 6th, 2011 Detectives with the Walker County Sheriff’s Department Investigation Division, members of the U.S. Marshalls, Harris County Sheriff’s Department, Texas Attorney General’s Office and Walker County Constables John Hooks, Reed Prehoda, Steve Hill and Gene Bartee were conducting Sex Offender Compliance Checks.

     At approximately 3:00 PM two officers were at a residence located on FM 1791 in Walker County conducting a Compliance Check on a white male subject, Curtis Wayne Moritz (27 years of age). During the check, Moritz, became very nervous and began acting strangely. Moritz then retrieved a handgun and he and one of the officers began struggling for control over the handgun. While this struggle ensued Moritz discharged the hand gun twice and both projectiles struck Moritz in the chest. It is unknown if Moritz intended to harm the officers or just himself at this time. EMS units responded to the scene but Moritz expired prior to their arrival.

     Neither of the officers conducting the check received any major injuries during this incident. The officers’ names are being with held at this time.

     Moritz’s body was transported to the Dallas County Medical Examiners Office for autopsy.

     The Walker County Sheriff’s Department and the Texas Rangers are conducting further investigation into this incident.
