In January of this year, a Grimes County Deputy was responding to a Family Violence call in the Shiro Community. While enroute he spotted Benefield and gave chase. During the chase, he lost control of his vehicle crashing and causing the vehicle to burst into flames. The deputy was able to crawl out but was injured. A short time later DPS was able to take Benefield into custody. His bond was set at $50,000 but not long after reduced to $25,000. This week his trial by jury started. Just like a recent case in Montgomery County, Benefield showed up the first day of court but failed to show the next day. The Judge ordered a failure to appear warrant and allowed the trial to continue. The jury found him guilty. Due to his record, he is looking at 25 years to life in prison. Thursday evening the Grimes County District Attorney issued a bail jumping warrant and approved extradition from anywhere including International.
