Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a fatal crash at 6144 Southwest Freeway (I-69) about 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 14.
The suspect, Victor Manuel Garcia, 48, is charged with intoxication manslaughter in the 182nd State District Court.
Corina Benitez Gomez, 34, of Willis was transported to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her 3-year-old daughter Dayana Padron who was also transported died after surgery.
Eleven people were transported to area hospitals following a five vehicle crash involving: a black Dodge Durango, a white Chevrolet Tahoe, a black Scion TC, a white Chevrolet Impala and a blue Honda CRV.
Garcia who was driving the Durango was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the Southwest Freeway and sideswiped the Scion before striking the Tahoe head-on. The Tahoe, driven by Benitez was then struck again by a blue Honda CRV. The driver of the Scion lost control and was struck head-on by the Impala.
Benitez had left Willis and was on a trip to Mexico when she was struck.
Garci, who lives in Southeast Houston has since bonded out of the Harris County Jail on two $60,000 bonds for each of the intoxication manslaughter charges. He has also hired an attorney.
