WRECKER 101-HOW TO RETRIEVE A TRUCK OUT OF THE RIVER

Just  after 10:30a.m. Caney Creek, Central Montgomery County Fire and Needham Road Fire Departments were dispatched to a major accident with a reported truck in the San Jacinto River at SH 242. As units arrived on the scene DPS and Sheriff’s deputies were told by two men riding horses they had spotted the vehicle in the water.

Fire crews and wrecker drivers determined that there were no occupants.

The challenge was for one of the wreckers to have to work it’s was to the river and remove the truck.

Normally on a scene the drivers place tokens in a hat and the token that is drawn by the officer gets the tow. As the tokens are pulled the first one normally goes to the driver who gets the tow. However, this time Trooper Fountain let the drivers sweat a bit as she held the winning chip and handed the losers chips back to them. Tension could be seen on several faces replaced by looks of relief as the chip was given back to them.

Texan Towing was the designated company for this job. With the help of Saddle Creek and Northpoint he drove his truck to the rivers edge. With not enough cable to reach the distance chains from the other wreckers were added. The drivers swam and waded to the 2001 Chevrolet pickup and after hooking it up started the slow process of bringing it in.

Once it was brought in the Northpoint truck was used to pull the Texas towing truck out of the mud on the bank of the river. With him out the Northpoint truck was now buried in the sand as Texan towing got in front of him to pull him out.

Texan Towing the was able, by using his four wheel drive pull the vehicle away from the river and to dry land.

Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office talked with the owner of the truck which was registered on Sleepy Hollow not far north of the location it was found. There it was determined the owner asked he grandson to return the truck to the car lot they had purchased it from as they were unable to maintain the payments.

The truck was in the river with the keys in it. Law Enforcement are still investigating how the vehicle ended up in the river.
