10-YEAR-OLD SAVES MOTHER AND SISTER

Just before 5pm Jennifer Bass was driving westbound on FM 1960 just east of Timber Forest when she started to have an apparent seizure. Her son Leam and her daughter were sitting in the back seat. Leam, who attends Bear Branch Elementary saw what was happening as the car started to head for the ditch. On the other side of the ditch was a wrought iron fence which was around a retention pond. It was unknown how deep the water was but the drop to the water would have been over 10-feet. Leam immediately climbed over the back seat into the front and started steering the vehicle. He was able to hold it on the road a short time; however, his mother’s foot was still on the accelerator. Leam tried to steer into a parking lot of Shipley Doughnuts. As he did the vehicle dropped off the edge of the drive, this caused his mother’s foot to dislodge from the accelerator. Leam steered into the parking lot but was not able to get to the pedals. The vehicle was heading for the Shipley Doughnut building. Leam steered into a handicap parking sign which stopped the vehicle. Jennifer Bass was transported in stable condition to the hospital. Her mother-in-law. Glenda Bass said Jennifer has never had a seizure before. She calls her grandson a hero.
