On-scene notes & video by Scott J. Engle
ABOUT 8:30 THIS MORNING, AN MCSO DEPUTY ON PATROL WATCHED A BLUE MUSTANG EXIT FROM THE MONTGOMERY PINES APARTMENTS AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. WHEN HE ATTEMPTED TO STOP THE VEHICLE IT FLED NORTHBOUND ON US59 IN EXCESS OF 100 MPH.
THE CHASE CONTINUED UNTIL THE SUSPECT, A 17-YEAR-OLD MALE FROM TOMBALL EXITED THE FREEWAY AT PATTON VILLAGE ON CREEKWOOD DRIVE. THE DEPUTY WAS UNABLE TO MAKE THE EXIT QUICK ENOUGH AND REMAINED ON THE FREEWAY IN THE CONSTRUCTION AREA.
AS HE TOPPED THE OVERPASS AT CREEKWOOD ROAD, HE SAW A LARGE CLOUD OF DUST AND SAW THE MUSTANG WRECKED IN THE ROADWAY.
ACCORDING TO DPS IT APPEARS THE VEHICLE WENT THROUGH THE CREEKWOOD INTERSECTION AND CONTINUED ON THE ONE LANE NORTHBOUND FEEDER WHICH IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION. HE THEN LOST CONTROL AND WENT INTO A SIDE SPIN LEAVING THE FEEDER AND DROPPED OFF THE EDGE OF THE ROADWAY ABOUT SIX FEET DOWN WHERE THE VEHICLE STARTED TO ROLL.
IT CONTINUED AND ONCE AGAIN DROPPED OFF THE NEXT ELEVATED SECTION AND DROPPED ANOTHER 12 FEET.
THE VICTIM WAS EJECTED. SPLENDORA FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED, ALONG WITH MONTGOMERY COUNTY EMS. PHI AIR MEDICAL WAS CALLED BUT ABORTED THE FLIGHT WHILE ENROUTE DUE TO FOG AND A LOW CEILING MOVING IN.
THE VICTIM WAS THEN TRANSPORTED TO BENTAUB HOSPITAL IN HOUSTON IN CRITICAL CONDITION BY GROUND AMBULANCE.
THE FREEWAY AND FEEDER REMAINED CLOSED FOR ALMOST TWO HOURS AS TROOPERS INVESTIGATED THE ACCIDENT.
THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN REPORTED STOLEN, AND THE OWNERS CAME TO THE SCENE.
THE OWNER WAS VERY DISTRAUGHT AND SAID SHE HAD THE CAR PAID OFF, AND JUST YESTERDAY TOOK OUT A $1400 LOAN ON IT. SHE ONLY HAD LIABILITY INSURANCE. THEY FOLLOWED TROOPERS, DEPUTIES AND THE WRECKER TO THE EAST MONTGOMERY COUNTY COURTHOUSE WHERE THEY RECOVERED SMALL THINGS, SUCH AS PHOTOS, CELL PHONES, HER PURSE (WHICH WAS MISSING ANY CASH THAT WAS THERE) AND A LITTLE STUFFED ANIMAL THAT SAID “AFLAC” WHICH WAS HER BABY’S FAVORITE.
AT LAST REPORT, THE 17-YEAR-OLD WAS IN VERY CRITICAL CONDITION.
