On Monday, December 13, 2010 at approximately 10:00 am, Conroe Police Officers responded to a residence on London Green, located in Windsor Lakes Subdivision. Officers were asked to check the status of the resident. Upon arrival, officers met with a co-worker of the resident. The co-worker stated she had entered the residence and observed the resident to be non-responsive. Officers located the resident and observed signs of what appeared to be blunt force trauma to the resident. The resident was identified as Vera Martha Starkey, 68 years of age.
Criminal Investigators and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene and began a criminal investigation. Evidence at the scene and information from family members and neighbors led investigators to believe that a grandson of the victim was the last person known to be with the victim. The grandson was identified as Brock Andrew Starkey, 17 years of age. According to family members, Brock Starkey was last seen approximately two days ago. Investigators issued a nationwide missing person broadcast including a possible vehicle description to law enforcement agencies regarding Brock Starkey.
At approximately 4:00 pm, Conroe Police Investigators received information that a DPS Trooper stopped Brock Starkey east of El Paso, Texas, for a traffic violation. Brock Starkey was driving the vehicle described in the broadcast. The Trooper confirmed the information in the broadcast and detained Starkey for further investigation. Conroe Police Investigators with the assistance of Texas Rangers both locally and in El Paso, were able to obtain an arrest warrant for Brock Andrew Starkey for the charge of Murder, Felony First Degree. Starkey was arrested and transported to the Hudspeth County Jail with a $500,000.00 bond.
