Severe storms sprang up Tuesday afternoon, snapping power lines and tree limbs and causing a deadly building collapse in Conroe.
A home under construction in the Ladera Creek community collapsed due to high winds sometime after 3 p.m. According to Conroe Assistant Fire Chief Mike Legoudes, two workers were killed and several others were injured in the structure collapse on Pampaneria Drive. Seven injured victims were taken to an area hospital. There’s no further word on their conditions.
Montgomery County Judge Mark Keough reported storm damage, possibly from a tornado, in the Calvary Road area at about 4 p.m. Residents are advised to avoid the area and considered any downed power lines as being electrified. Emergency crews are assessing the damage.
Just before 4 p.m., Huntsville ISD transportation shared on Facebook that due to damage in the Forest Hills subdivisions. Students who live there were to be held at the district’s transportation department, where parents/guardians could pick them up.
“Due to this afternoon’s storm, there is too much damage in the Forest Hills subdivision for us to safely deliver students home on Bus 25 or Bus 43 routes. Those students will be held at the (Huntsville ISD) Transportation Department where parents/guardians can come to pick them up. Please drive safe. Thank you,” the post read. “Bus 25Â & 43 will avoid the Forest Hills area this afternoon. All students who live in the Forest Hills area will have to be picked up from transportation this afternoon.”
According to Butch Davis, the Walker County emergency management coordinator, about 20 homes in the Forest Hills subdivision suffered damage.
At least one person was also injured at Imperial Collision and Mechanical near I-45 after its roof collapsed.
In a 5 p.m. update, there were reports of about 4,500 people without power.
Also in Huntsville, a tree appeared to have fallen on top of an apartment at the Timbercrest Townhomes. It was not known if anyone was injured.
