240 YEARS FOR MULTIPLE SEXUAL ASSAULTS OF A CHILD

imageJudge Lisa Michalk, in the 221st District Court of Montgomery County, Texas, sentenced Jose Diego Cruz-Escobar, 54 of El Salvador, to a total of 240 years in prison for four separate incidents of sexually assaulting a child. On April 8, 2014, a jury convicted Cruz-Escobar on all eight counts in the indictment, which included four counts of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child and four counts of Indecency With a Child by Sexual Contact. Assistant District Attorney Amanda Petroff prosecuted the case. During trial, Petroff presented evidence of ongoing sexual abuse of the victim, who was 13 years old at the time. During the punishment phase of the trial, Petroff presented evidence that the defendant also sexually abused another child, who was 10 years old at the time, along with evidence of multiple violent acts in the past, including arrests for Resisting Arrest, Assault of a Police Officer, and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

After sentencing Cruz-Escobar to 40 years on each count of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child and 20 years on each count of Indecency with a Child, Judge Michalk ordered that his sentences run consecutively, making his earliest date of parole in approximately 120 years.

“The jury and judge did exactly what our community demands we do with sex offenders,” said Brett Ligon, District Attorney. “Mr. Cruz-Escobar will now spend the rest of his life in prison away from other possible victims. In Montgomery County and my office, protecting children is the highest priority.”
