4 Liberty County fire departments fought to contain it

On the same night that firefighters in Montgomery County found a body inside a burning structure that became a total loss, their neighbors to the east were also busy a structure too far gone to save.

Shortly after 1:30 a.m. Monday, Tarkington firefighters were dispatched to a report of a structure fire on CR2184 near CR2192. When dispatchers said the caller reported a large fire, Tarkington Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Dalton Gregory requested additional units from Cleveland and North Liberty County Fire Departments be toned to provide tankers and additional manpower.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a large double-wide mobile home engulfed in flames and requested another tone to bring Plum Grove VFD for further assistance.

The structure was apparently unoccupied and the fire progressed to the point that nothing was salvageable, so firefighters went into defensive mode, concentrating on preventing the fire from spreading.

The Liberty County Fire Marshal’s office was contacted to investigate the cause of the fire.
