AIDS Foundation Houston hosts annual world AIDS Day luncheon

Actress and AIDS Activist Pam Grier to Give Keynote Address

HOUSTON, TX — AIDS Foundation Houston, together with event chairs Ernie Manouse and Bill Baldwin, will host the annual World AIDS Day Luncheon, sponsored by Chevron, on Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. at the Post Oak Hilton Hotel. AIDS Foundation Houston is the only community-based AIDS services organization solely dedicated to ending HIV/AIDS in Houston. The World AIDS Day luncheon hosted by AIDS Foundation Houston is an annual event that raises much needed dollars to support the goal of “getting to zero” — zero new infections, zero AIDS-related deaths and zero stigma.

This year’s event is co-chaired by Ernie Manouse (senior producer/host, Houston Public Media) and Bill Baldwin (owner, Boulevard Realty). Manouse and Baldwin, who have both supported AIDS Foundation Houston in various capacities throughout the years, will together welcome international AIDS activist and actress Pam Grier as the keynote speaker.

Grier is best known for her roles in Foxy Brown, Friday Foster and, most recently, Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown, for which she received a Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress. Television credits include appearances on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit and Smallville. Her memoir, Foxy: My Life in Three Acts, is a New York Times Bestseller. Grier is widely regarded as cinema’s first female action star. In addition to her professional pursuits, Grier has served as an international advocate and activist supporting AIDS awareness and research and has served as a national spokesperson for the international AIDS awareness event Dining Out for Life.

In addition to remarks by Pam Grier, this year AIDS Foundation Houston will award the Shelby Hodge Vision Award to the Houston Bar Association AIDS Outreach Committee. The Shelby Hodge Vision Award seeks to recognize a community leader’s commitment to improving the lives of men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS. The Houston Bar Association AIDS Outreach Committee was created during the 1996-97 bar year in an effort to provide legal education and services to people living with HIV/AIDS. Through the committee’s annual Holiday Adopt-a-Family project, 54 families and nine individuals (221 people of all ages) were served by more than 50 law firms, legal departments and individuals who participated in the 2014 campaign. Additionally, the HBA AIDS Outreach Committee hosts an Easter Luncheon for the residents at Omega House.

Through this annual event, AIDS Foundation Houston raises critical funds that support ending new HIV/AIDS infections and helps those who are infected. Individual tickets start at $150 per person, with corporate and individual underwriting opportunities available from $1,500.
