Another “Unfunded” Walmart Shopping Trip Ends with Free Rides…

…to JAIL!

LIBERTY COUNTY, TX- On Wednesday, around 10:30 p.m., Cleveland PD Officer E. Fleming responded to the Cleveland Walmart, in reference to a theft. He met with Walmart Loss Prevention staff, who said they saw a man and woman use the self-checkout to steal merchandise. The man, 29-year-old Jose Paulo Hernandez Rivas, and the woman, 24-year-old Ashlynn Mae Wilder, took merchandise to the self-checkout, where Rivas allegedly scanned several items and handed them, bagged, to Wilder, along with extra bags. They said Wilder then stuffed unscanned merchandise into the extra bags. Rivas then, allegedly helped her load unscanned items in the extra bags. They say Wilder then pushed the buggy toward the exit doors as Rivas paid for the items that were actually scanned, with neither ever attempting to pay for the items placed in the extra bags. Walmart Loss Prevention staff approached Ms. Wilder and detained her, and then Mr. Rivas until Officer Flemming arrived.

After reviewing the evidence, Officer Flemming arrested Rivas and Wilder. The value of the items stolen and then recovered totaled $647.33. Rivas and Wilder admitted stealing the merchandise.

Ashlynn Mae Wilder and Jose Paulo Hernandez Rivas, both Cleveland residents, are charged with class B misdemeanor Theft of Property, more than $100, but less than $750. Both were processed at the Cleveland Police Department before transport to the Liberty County Jail. Their bonds were set at $3,000 each. Both were released on bond the next day.
