About 230 a.m. an Austin Police officer was responding to a report of a drunk man inside the Walmart store at Interstate 35 and Parmer Lane in north Austin. .  As soon as the officer arrived and went inside the store the officer was attacked. Before he had a chance to pull his duty weapon the suspect pulled a semi-automatic pistol and shot the officer in the neck at point blank range. The officer  was able to get out an assist the officer.

Two store employees then tackled the suspect, disarmed him and held him down until other officers arrived at the scene. The first officer on the scene started CPR on his fellow officer but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer has not yet been identified but officials say he had been with the Austin Police Department for three years and prior to that with the Airport Police in Austin until they merged with the Austin Police Department in 2009.

Prior to that he was with the San Angelo Police Department.

He leaves behind a 10-year-old daughter and a 6-year-old daughter.

This was the second officer involved shooting that took place last night.  An officer attempted to stop a suspect at 51st and Manor near the old Austin Airport just after 6:30p.m. when the black male fled on foot. The officer, chased the suspect. The officer deployed his taser which had no  effect on the suspect. The suspect then tried to get the officers duty weapon. The officer then shot the suspect who died at the scene. The officer was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

As investigators started to investigate the shooting in a mainly black residential area a mob scene broke out with angry residents forcing Austin Police to bring out riot gear.

The scenes were only 9 miles apart.
