AUTO PEDESTRIAN FATAL CRASH

At approximately 7:17 PM on October 28, 2024, Kathleen Wheeler was operating a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe southbound in the center left turn lane of the 14500 block of FM 2100 Rd, near Crosby High, in Harris County, Texas. Gloria Rouse, a pedestrian, was also in the center left turn lane. It is undetermined whether she was crossing the roadway or standing still at the time of the incident, and the direction from which she approached is unknown. Gloria Rouse failed to yield the right of way and was struck by the Tahoe operated by Kathleen Wheeler. She was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center in critical condition but tragically succumbed to her injuries at 8:10 PM. Kathleen Wheeler remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. She did not show any signs of impairment. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division continues investigating the incident.

In Texas, the maximum distance you are allowed to drive in the center turn lane is 200 feet; you should only use it to prepare for and make a left turn, not for regular driving or passing.

Key points about center turn lanes in Texas:
  • Purpose: Only use the center turn lane to prepare for and make a left turn.

  • Distance limit: Do not travel more than 200 feet in the center turn lane.
