HARRIS COUNTY, TX- On Thursday, Pct. 4 Constable Mark Herman’s Office and Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzales’s Office responded to I-45 in the area of The Grand Parkway near Cypresswood Drive, where an unusual and lengthy standoff closed the Interstate to ensure public safety.
A woman who reportedly has a history of mental illness was involved in a crash and then displayed a firearm. When Deputies arrived, she reportedly sat in a folding chair on the main lanes of the freeway, refusing to comply with their commands to surrender the firearm. As a precaution, traffic was halted on the northbound and southbound main lanes of I-45 for the duration of the standoff, which lasted for hours, causing major traffic issues in both directions.
Thankfully, the incident ended with no shots fired. The woman was detained, and I-45 / the North Freeway was reopened.
Constable Herman’s Office posted the following statement:
“The standoff on the North Freeway and Cypresswood Drive has ended peacefully. Constable Deputies along with multiple law enforcement officers and first responders have safely apprehended the armed female suspect sitting on the main lanes of the freeway.
Thank you to all the brave first responders who helped resolve the situation peacefully.”
