BOATING ACCIDENT CRITICALLY INJURES TWO

Approximately 2:30p.m. this afternoon Deputy Wiese of the Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constables Office Marine Division was dispatched to a boating accident. Deputy Wiese responded to the reported address on April Point South in the April Sound Subdivision. Once on location and upon talking to witnesses it was determined that 7 people were out on the lake in a 1981 19 foot Wellcraft Bowrider. The vessel was being operated by Margarita Cardenas who stated the throttle shifter was sticky and she accidentally shoved the vessel into reverse running over a 10 year old nephew and his father (Hector Cardenas) with the boats propeller. The boy had critical injuries to the legs with lacerations down to the bone. Family members made a tourniquet  out of ski rope to stop the bleeding which probably saved the boys  life.

The family then drove to shore and transported the injured victims to the Lake Conroe Urgent Care Clinic on Hwy 105 West near Blue Herron Bay.

Emergency personnel were notified. Upon their arrival it was determined to be necessary to Life Flight the 10 year old to Herman Hospital (downtown) Houston and transport the father by ground ambulance to the same location.

The driver was checked for any signs of impairment and none were found. It does not appear alcohol was a factor. The Montgomery County District Attorneys office was contacted and based on the events as we know the case will be forwarded for review but no charges will be filed at this time.

Margarita Cardenas had very little experience operating this boat.
