BREAKING: New DPS Director Named

On Wednesday, the Public Safety Commission announced the new Director of the Texas Department of Public Safety will be current DPS Senior Deputy Director Freeman Martin. He’ll officially take the new position December 1, when now DPS Director Steven C. McCraw retires.

Martin has held the position of Senior Deputy Director since 2018. He became a DPS Trooper in 1990. His career path to the top has included serving as a Highway Patrol Corporal in Lubbock, Sergeant in the Narcotics Service in Houston, Texas Ranger Sergeant in Houston, Texas Ranger Lieutenant in Austin, Texas Ranger Captain in the Office of Audit and Inspection, Texas Ranger Captain, and Texas Ranger Major in Houston. In 2014, he was named Regional Commander for the Central Texas Region, where he remained until 2018.
With all the “hats” Senior Deputy Director Martin has worn comes knowledge and experience in a plethora of situations involving everything from violent crime prevention to crisis management. Martin is credited with establishing a Texas Anti=Gang Center in San Antonio, co-development of the Texas Rangers Major Crime Scene Response Team Program and many other effective initiatives that continue to benefit Texas residents. He’s dealt with natural and manmade disasters and shown tremendous leadership in every crisis that materialized.
Martin has received too many commendations to list and probably deserved many that will never even be known. Texas has been better for Martin devoting his life to serving and protecting. Expectations are high as he becomes the next Director, and those expectations are based on Martin’s exemplary history in law enforcement.
