Shannon Miles was indicted this morning in the Capital Murder of Harris County Deputy Darren Goforth. Goforth who was gunned down on August 28 after he pumped gas into his patrol car while on duty. Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson said video surveillance showed Miles sitting in his red Ford Ranger pickup in the parking lot. Goforth finished pumping gas and went into the store. On his way back out Miles is seen in a white t-shirt and red shorts get out of his truck and run up behind Goforth. He then put the gun to the back of Goforth’s head and fired. As Goforth falls to the ground, Miles stands over him and continues to fire into him.
Miles then walked back to his pickup and drove off.
Investigators ran that type of vehicle against the state database for vehicles matching that description in that zip code and came up with the Pine Falls location.
When deputies approached the home where the truck was parked a man answered the door and told them that it was his brothers truck. He told them his brother had gone to Walmart with his mother. As they returned home deputies confronted Miles who admitted it was his truck. When asked about a gun he told them he had a 40mm pistol he kept in the garage in a blue gym bag.
After a search warrant was obtained deputies recovered the gun and a white ice chest which was seen in the videos in the back of the truck.
THe gun was empty but ballistics matched it to the 15 shell casings found at the scene or the shooting.
Authorities are calling the shooting an unprovoked, execution style ambush because Goforth wore blue.
District Attorney Devon Anderson said she will seek the death penalty. It could be a year before the case goes to trial. In the mean time Miles remains with no bond in the Harris County Jail.
