BURN BAN STATEMENT

Despite Recent Rains, Most of County remains in the grip of multi-year drought.

Conroe, Tx , July 15, 2013: Montgomery County Commissioner’s, acting on a recommendation from County Fire Marshal Jimmy Williams, approved an order in today’s Commissioner’s Court session extending the current burn ban for up to 90 days.

Sporadic rains over the past few days have brought relief to some of the area, but most of Montgomery County remains at a higher risk for wildfires. Today’s average Keetch-Byram Drought Index sits at 619, with some areas around Magnolia above 700. Readings above 600 represent higher fire danger, while readings above 700 indicates larger wildfires are possible. Fortunately, prevailing winds this summer have been lighter than they were in 2011, the last major wildfire season in Southeast Texas. Most recent fires have been quickly contained and extinguished by firefighters and the Texas A&M Forest Service.

Officials will continue to monitor drought conditions and issue updates as conditions warrant. Area residents are urged to comply with the ban. Always check on the status of the burn ban by calling your local fire station or the MCFMO.
