On Thursday, January 23, 2020, a Liberty County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Interdiction Unit conducted a traffic stop in the 1000 block of S. Washington in Cleveland, Texas. The vehicle stopped was a green Ford F-150 pickup truck. The driver identified himself as Jose Medina-Cervantes, W/M, DOB: 8/24/1986. The deputy could not find proof of his identity. Consent to search the vehicle was given. During the search, the deputies found a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun that was reported stolen out of Harris County. A baby diaper box was located in the toolbox that was mounted to the bed of the pickup. There were six (6) silver taped bundles inside the box. The deputies believed that the bundles were illegal contraband. A test of the bundles showed that it was heroin.

Approximately three (3) kilos [6 pounds] of heroin were recovered. After the arrest, it was determined that the driver provided false information about his identification. His real name is Felipe Reyes. He is an illegal immigrant. Due to the fact that he possessed a firearm and was in possession of an illegal drug a hold for immigration was placed on him. Reyes was charged with Manufacture/Delivery of a Controlled Substance – Aggravated Felony.

An illegal immigrant in Liberty county lying to police and transporting drugs.. I never would have guessed.

Could probably net a lot more of these if an immigration checkpoint was set up on Plum Grove Rd. They have checkpoints in south Texas, so I don’t see why we couldn’t have a couple in Liberty and Montgomery counties.
