Car Swept Into River

Cleveland Police and firefighters rescued a couple whose vehicle was swept into the San Jacinto River Saturday night.

Cleveland Police Captain Scott Felts said around 9:30 p.m., a passerby on US 59 at the Cleveland City Limits called 911 and reported seeing the vehicle being carried away with current. Cleveland Police responded and tried to reach the vehicle, but were unsuccessful. The Cleveland Fire Department soon arrived and found conditions too muddy to launch a boat.

Firefighters trekked through the mud and water on foot to reach the victims, and then used a lifeline and life vests to pull them to safety. EMS checked out the victims and made sure they were not injured.

Captain Felts said Cleveland Police Officers stayed with the couple the entire time, helping to calm and reassure them while firefighters responded and determined the best way to safely return them to dry land.

“Officers Trevino and Prince disregarded their own safety and ran toward the subjects in danger,” Captain Felts said. “I’m glad the citizens are safe and we’re thankful for the fire department’s help.”
