CHARGES PENDING ON CRUELTY TO ANIMALS

Montgomery County Precinct 4 and Precinct 5 Livestock Officers were called by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office this weekend regarding several starving horses on FM 2854 west of Conroe. Deputy Don Smith, Livestock Officer with responder to the scene to meet with two Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputies who had been called to check the welfare of the animals. After seeing the conditions they contacted  constables.

One horse was found on the property with no source of food or water. A feed room in a small makeshift barn contained less than 3 pounds of food. Next to that feed room were two stalls that were locked. In each stall was a dead horse. Smith said with the cold weather both could have been deceased for at least a week.

Smith seized the one horse that was still alive but over one hundred pounds underweight.

There was also a dog on the site. Montgomery County Animal Control was contacted to respond to check the dog’s welfare.

After speaking with the owner on the phone Smith was able to get permission to remove the horse from the property. A hearing will still need to be conducted to turn the horse over to the SPCA.

The owner of the horses admitted to Smith he had been down on his luck and without a job hasn’t been able to afford the animals.

Charges of cruelty to animals will be filed on the owner, Varrick Johnson of Montgomery.
