A family miscommunication on the whereabouts of their small child resulted in the tragic accidental death of little Mason Thompson, DOB 10-23-14 when he wandered into the path of his father’s truck while his father was backing out of the drive way on CR 48824 in South Liberty County. According to Liberty County Sheriff’s lead Investigator Sgt. Brian Bortz, it was about 6:15pm on Thursday, June 9th. when the mother of little Mason thought he was with his father in his truck and her husband thought their only son was with his mother in their home when the accident happened.
Pct. 4 Justice of the Peace, Judge Larry Wilburn, arrived on the scene and pronounced the child deceased while also ordering an autopsy. Chaplain Delmar Coward of the Sheriff’s Family Assistance Unit also responded and offered support to the highly distraught parents both at the scene and later at the hospital where the mother was taken as she was overcome with grief.
Sgt. Bortz said that other members of the family were being contacted all day on Friday to let them know of the accident and that all evidence indicates this to be just a terrible accident and no further action is anticipated.
