Drivers were told to avoid the East Beltway at Woodforest after a concrete mixer lost control, fell off the mainlanes, and landed on a vehicle below.

The person who died on Friday when a concrete-mixing truck rolled over in east Harris County was a child who may be just 22 months old.

Calling it a “tragic incident,” Sheriff Ed Gonzalez elaborated on details of the crash that happened at 2:23 p.m. along the Beltway 8 East and Woodforest Boulevard.

“It appears a cement truck traveling on the main lanes (of the Beltway) lost control, went over the overpass and landed on top of a vehicle with four occupants. Three of the occupants were able to get out of the vehicle, but the 4th, a child did not,” Gonzalez tweeted, adding that the child died at the scene.

The intersection of the East Beltway and Woodforest was shut down as the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division investigates.

It’s not immediately known what caused the truck to fall off the Beltway.
