city council calls special session to remove montgomery police chief

"A special, closed session of the Montgomery City Council has been called for 3:00 p.m., Friday, March 25, 2011. According to the agenda, the sole item to be discussed is: “consideration and possible action regarding the employment of the City Police Chief,” which as you know is Chief Ken Hudgens.

According to Chief Hudgens he has problems with three city council members for quite some time now. The reason they are giving him is they want a full-time police chief. Chief Hudgens only works part-time as he is a Houston Fire Firefighter assigned to Kingwood.  Chief Hudgens said they have been micro-managing his department for quite a long time now and are trying to get him out.

Hudgens spent the day today cleaning his office as he has talked with the City Attorney about resigning effective May 30, 2011. Chief Hudgens said, “ if I am terminated I will lose all his back time, vacation, and comp time owed me.”. He continued to say that if the three council members were gone he would stay as he loves the people of Montgomery and felt he was doing a good job but he was tired of fighting the three council members.

Today a Facebook page has gone up in support of the chief. The link is below.

Keep Kenneth Hudgens as Montgomery Police Chief

Comments have been coming in for support of the Chief for almost eight hours now. Some are concerned why the special meeting was called for 3:00 p.m. knowing most of the citizens of Montgomery are at work and will not be able to voice their opinion.

Jenna Rogers who lives in  Montgomery said, “Chief Hudgens has been a pillar of our community, and a friend of Montgomery High School, its students, parents, and faculty. We consider him a positive role model and an iconic leader of the community. He spends countless unpaid hours volunteering to help citizens of the community above and beyond what he is employed to do in his position. Apparently, City Council members have taken on the task of micro-managing the functions of the Montgomery Police Department, although they have little or no personal experience in police matters. Even though you may not live in the city limits of the City of Montgomery, you may be directly affected by this action since you drive though the City of Montgomery, shop or eat in local businesses, and have children that attend schools in MISD.”

She continued to say, “I encourage you to take action and be involved in the community by contacting the following people to express your opinions on this matter and encourage City Council to work out their differences. Mayor Travis Mabry at [email protected] or [email protected] and City Administrator Bill Kotlan at [email protected]. Or you can call 936-597-6434 to be put on the agenda before the meeting. ".

Editors note: I have known  Chief Hudgens for almost 15 years. First with the Houston Fire Department and now with Montgomery Police Department. Just about every major scene I have ever been on there the Chief has responded. This even on his off time. He is not one to sit in an office and run the department, he gets out and works. In these hard economic times many departments are looking for ways to cut back to save money. Chief Hudgens has been doing a great job part-time. Why use extra funds for a full-time Chief.?
